Originally developed as a summer estate by automobile manufacturer Charles Nash, the property became a private boy's camp named Camp Thunderbolt in the 1940s. In 1952, it was purchased by the YMCA in Waukegan, IL, and became Camp Jorn. During the last 10 years, new facilities & programs were added including a year 'round child care center.
In 2007, the camp was purchased from the Lake County Family YMCA in Illinois and is now an independent YMCA. The magic of Camp Jorn YMCA provides adventurous and life-enriching experiences, building friendships and memories in a pristine northwoods setting.
The camp continues to campaign for funds which will create a foundation of future community service in the Northwoods as well as resident camp programs for kids near & far. Camp Jorn YMCA offers year 'round child care, including summer 'day camp' for kids age 5-12. The main lodge is available for rent and a couple of cabins may be rented for large groups (fall, winter and spring).
